One of the Center for Teaching Through Children’s Books’ new projects provides local family-oriented businesses with free books to share with the children who accompany their guardians/parents. Our initial test-run for this project focused on businesses in the city of Berwyn, IL, offering free books to dentists, doctors, family hair salons, and similar local businesses, as well as providing small collections of books to children’s play areas in larger area laundromats. We are staying in contact with each business, checking on the use of the books and any need to replenish. It is our hope to expand this project to other communities, and to inspire other book and literacy-focused organizations to set up their own collections in their local communities.
